Casa Monica Hotel, c. 1890
View of the Casa Monica Hotel and city street in St. Augustine, Florida. Frank W. Smith opened the Casa Monica Hotel in 1888 using Moorish Revival and Spanish Baroque Revival architecture. Henry Flagler purchased the hotel shortly after it opened and renamed it the Cordova Hotel. In 1902, Flagler merged the Cordova Hotel with his Alcazar Hotel via a bridge and renamed it the Alcazar Annex. After the Great Depression, the Alcazar Annex was in disrepair and sat empty for 30 years until it was renovated to become the St. John's County Courthouse in 1968. Richard Kessler purchased the property in the 1990s and after renovations turned it back into a hotel, becoming the Casa Monica Resort & Spa still in business today.
