Walter Kitching Co., 1917
Walter Kitching (1846-1932) immigrated to the U.S. in 1867 and settled in Florida in about 1883. In 1887 he started a business delivering goods to settlers along Indian River. In 1894, he and wife Emma Michaels built a home in Stuart and grew pineapples and fruit. In 1897, he opened a general store on what's now Flagler Avenue near the railroad and the water; this he sold to Raulerson Grocery Company in 1922. In 1914 he built this second store, which included the town's first cold storage and soda fountain; it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1928. -
Rice's Hotel & Restaurant, c. 1955
This building was originally the Roebuck Building, built in 1927 on U.S. 1 near Frazier Creek, by Robert R. Roebuck, housing the Rob Roy Hotel and the Economy Grocery. It was sold to William Rice in November 1945, remodeled, and reopened as the Rice's Hotel & Restaurant. Rice's Market, on the first floor of the hotel and restaurant, was added in September 1949 and a Standard Service station was built next door in November 1949. Rice Hotel was closed in 1956. -

George W. Parks General Merchandise, c. 1905
Man stands outside the George W. Parks general merchandise store (in 2023 Stuart Heritage Museum), built in 1901, which changed its name to Stuart Mercantile in 1913. The open veranda on the second floor was enclosed in 1910. Also visible is the railroad crossing and "Look out for the cars" signs.Tags Stores & shops -

Decorated automobiles drive down Osceola Street, watched by people on sidewalks. Businesses visible include: P&L Stores Ltd. (established 1948, replaced by H.C. Pence by Dec 1949), Stuart Hardware Company, Horseshoe Bar (1943-1950), police station, and The Lyric Theatre. Car in front features Cromer's Market, with two women in bathing suits. -
Broster Kitching's post office and home, c. 1910
Broster Kitching (1838-1915) moved the post office from his boarding house on the south side of the railroad tracks to this building on Flagler Avenue. On the right is his home. -
Kindred's grocery store, 1964
Kindred's first store, the "superette" (1948-1961), was located near Confusion Corner. In 1961, the Kindred family opened this new 12,000 square foot building on Colorado Avenue. Signs on the front include a stylized reclining cow, the slogan "The Home of Lazy Aged Beef," and "Gold Bond Stamps." -
Krueger building, 1950
The Krueger Building, on Old Dixie Highway between 2nd Street (Joan Jefferson Way in 2024) and California Avenue, was built by Albert Paul "Bert" Krueger and completed in January 1925; the building was demolished in 1993. Businesses in this image include: Western Union, Flamingo Hotel, Southeastern Gas & Appliances, and Anthony's Grocery (located in the Krueger Building between 1949 and 1952). -
