McDonald family
Description
Mary McDonald Hartman was the daughter of Jackson B. and Elizabeth McDonald. She graduated from Stuart High School in 1919 and graduated from Florida State College for Women in 1921 in the business program. In 1922, she married Ralph W Hartman Sr. (1898-1961), who later became the Stuart postmaster. Mary McDonald Hartman was a reporter and writer for the Stuart News (where she had the "society" column), the Palm Beach Post, Miami Herald, and the Ft. Pierce Tribune. She served on the board of directors of the Historical Society of Martin County, Martin County Library Board, and on the State Children's Commission. She had four children: Ralph Hartman Jr. (1924–2001), Jackson Mitchell Hartman (1926–1997), Donald McDonald Hartman (1929–2004), and Brady Chambers Hartman (1936–1995).
The McDonald family arrived in Stuart in 1912. J.B. McDonald was the first mayor of Stuart, from 1914 to 1915. He and his wife Elizabeth built a successful real estate business. They built, sold, or managed several properties, including Lincoln Park (which was marketed to African Americans). Their apartment house and business buildings burnt down on 1 Jan 1916, and he rebuilt soon thereafter. The "McDonald block" on the corner of what is now Akron Avenue and Second Street stood in Stuart for many years. For several years (1919-1925) he made his home in Moore Haven, West Palm, and Fort Pierce, chiefly serving as a secretary to "commercial clubs" or chambers of commerce. In 1925, he was appointed by Governor Martin to be the first superintendent of public instruction of Martin County (1925-1926).
The photoalbum in this collection was created by Mary Elizabeth McDonald and features photos from between 1914 and 1918 when Mary was a student at Stuart High School in Stuart, Florida. The individual photographs are chiefly from the photoalbum, scanned at 150 dpi.
