F.L. Powell's Diner & Motel, c. 1955
Cars parked in front of the F.L. Powell's Diner & Motel on U.S. 1 in North Stuart, about two miles north of the Roosevelt Bridge. The diner opened in 1949 and existed until at least 1970. Signs include food available, "tasty food," and "air conditioning optional." -
The Owl House, c. 1945
House with four-pointed gable roof located on Colorado Avenue at the waterfront. Built in 1904 for Indiantown rancher Francis Marion and Annie Platt. Charles and Ethel Porter purchased the home in about 1910.Tags Dwellings -
George W. Parks General Merchandise, c. 1905
Man stands outside the George W. Parks general merchandise store (in 2023 Stuart Heritage Museum), built in 1901, which changed its name to Stuart Mercantile in 1913. Postcard of the F.E.C. railroad bridge across the St. Lucie River, Stuart, Fla. View of large building, train bridge, and landing pier for ferry, and bridgetender's house in upper right. The original wooden Florida East Coast railroad bridge, built in 1894, was replaced by a concrete and steel bridge in 1905. The "auto bridge" was not built until 1918. -

Broster Kitching's post office and home, c. 1910
Broster Kitching (1838-1915) moved the post office from his boarding house on the south side of the railroad tracks to this building on Flagler Avenue. On the right is his home. -
Kindred's grocery store, 1964
Kindred's first store, the "superette" (1948-1961), was located near Confusion Corner. In 1961, the Kindred family opened this new 12,000 square foot building on Colorado Avenue. Signs on the front include a stylized reclining cow, the slogan "The Home of Lazy Aged Beef," and "Gold Bond Stamps."
