Description

Two men posed in front of a sign "U.S. Navy Witham Field, Stuart, Florida." A small airfield, Krueger Field opened in 1928 near Witham Field. In 1942, the county leased the land to the federal government. First called McArthur Field, its name was changed to Witham Field in 1943 after Martin County native Paul “Homer” Witham, an enlisted Naval Aviation Pilot First Class, was the first Naval Aviator from the City of Stuart killed in WWII. The land returned to the county in 1947.
